Our class read the book, "Squirrel's New Year's Resolution" by Pat Miller. We then discussed what a New Year's Resolution is and brainstormed a list of possible resolutions we could make. The students then worked on making and writing 2 New Year's Resolutions for 2017. Take a look at some of our work!

Our class has been learning about beat and rhythm in Music. We are using tapping sticks to create and follow a variety of rhythm patterns. Take a look at the photos below: Today we spent some time working with words. We reviewed 'word families' (rhyming words) such as an, at, it, etc. using word blocks to make word family towers and then wrote the words down in their families. We also, worked on making silly sentences using the word puzzle pieces. The students made sure they had a capital letter at the beginning of their sentence and a period at the end. They were able to be creative with the words in between! (One student wrote: A green apple fell on a bird.) We practised spelling our word wall words using letter tiles, wooden letters, alphabet magnets and transparent letters to build our words.
In Math, we have been learning to tell time to the nearest hour. The students learned about the hour hand and minute hand and faces of clocks. We learned about digital clocks and analog clocks too and how to read the time to the nearest hour. Take a look at some photos of our class working on telling time activities. Next, we will be learning about telling time to the nearest half hour!
This week our class filled our Gem Jar again! We did a great job working as a team to be kind, use our listening ears and follow our classroom rules. On Friday we decided to have technology time for our reward! This week we read the book "How many seeds in a pumpkin?" by Margaret McNamara and Brian Karas. The students completed a pumpkin booklet where they used words to describe their pumpkins, drew what their pumpkin looked like on the outside and inside, estimated how many pumpkin seeds were in their pumpkin and then counted their seeds to see how many seeds were actually in their pumpkins. Then we decided to group our pumpkin seeds into groups of 2's, 5's and 10's to see which way was easier/faster to count by. Take a look at our photos below:
These beautiful, glowing pumpkins have a lot going on: drawing from observations and sequence, primary colour mixing, adding highlights, cutting and pasting skills and composition.
Our Grade 1's at the St. James Halloween Dance-A-Thon. In anticipation of Halloween our class has been working on a pumpkin writing activity. First, we brainstormed and created a success criteria that outlined the necessary items needed for the construction of our paper pumpkins and our writing. The students decided each pumpkin would need a name, have teeth, be orange, be a certain size (tall/short), and make us feel an emotion when we see them (happy, smile, etc.)
Next, the students went ahead and created their own pumpkins using construction paper. Then, we looked at our pumpkins and wrote sentences for each of the items in our success criteria. As a group we wrote one sentence at a time. We reviewed how to write a proper sentence using an upper case letter at the beginning of a sentence and a period at the end. We also talked about how we need finger spaces between words. The students worked very hard on this writing task! Our first sentence tells what our pumpkins name is. Our second sentence tells what colour our pumpkin is and describes it's size (tall/short/round/small, etc.). Our third sentence tells how many teeth our pumpkin has. Our last sentence tells how our pumpkin makes us feel (happy, smile, giggle, etc.). Please take a look at some of our finished work below. Our class has been busy doing recount writing. The students have learned what First, Next, Then and Last mean. The students wrote about what they do when they get ready to come to school. They wrote sentences with capital letters to start a sentence, finger spaces between words and periods to end a sentence. They also worked hard to use and spell word wall words and sound out words they do not know how to spell yet. Take a look at some of our work below:
