Today we started our new math unit on measurement. Students started by comparing lengths and heights and began to measure objects around the classroom with cubes. We will be focusing on measuring length and area with various nonstandard units (ie. paper clips, cubes, straws).

In math, we have finished our unit on money. The students have learned the coin names and their values and different ways to make money amounts up to 20 cents.
Last week the students prepared for Easter by making some art work. We made Easter eggs, bunnies, created the last supper and coloured the stations of the cross. I hope everyone had a wonderful Easter with family and friends.
Last week we had Scientists in the School come to our class to do a Science Workshop on Objects, Materials and Structures. The students enjoyed working in centers to learn about various materials (such as plastic, wood, metal, etc.), man-made and natural materials, types of fastners (glue, tape, screws, etc.), and building strong stable structures. The students even did an engineering challenge where they built a stool out of newspaper that had to be strong enough to hold a load, which was Ms. Landry!
Her are some photos of our spirit days to raise money for Sunrise Homes. Thank you to all the parents and students who supported this Lenten Fundraiser.
We have been working on subtraction in math. The students worked in PBL groups to create their own word problems and solved them by finding the difference using number sentences, tens frames, number lines and pictures. . They then presented them to the class. One group of students got creative and in their word problem created an addition and subtraction question. Way to go Grade Ones! We have been reading various poems in class, and looking for rhyming words and word families. Last week we read the poem, "Cinnamon Toast" by S. Gingras-Fox. The student enjoyed finding words that rhymed in the poem and highlighting them.
