In math, we have been working on recognizing, identifying and creating repeating patterns. Students are able to identify the "core" of a pattern. Below are some photos of patterns that the students made in class. Ask your child what their pattern rule is (size, shape, colour), what type of repeating pattern it is (AB, ABC, AAB, ABB) and what the "core" of their pattern is (This is the beginning part of their pattern so they know what attributes to use to repeat).

The students learned about primary colours, overlapping and cityscapes when they created these works of art!. The students used only primary colours of red, yellow and blue. Happy International Dot Day! We had a blast celebrating in our classroom. The students all came dressed in dots and it was so great to see them get into the spirit of the day. The students came into class and made their own dots for our poster and signed their names beside their unique dot! We started our day listening to Peter Reynolds The Dot on the Smartboard. We spent a bit of time afterwards talking about the message in the story which is to persevere and don't give up. We discussed how Vashti kept trying and discovered that she really was a good artist. We talked about how that works for learning to do anything in the classroom too. We listened to the Dot Song. It is a catchy song that the kids enjoyed singing and doing the actions to. Next, it was time for dot fun. Our first activity was a dot scavenger hunt. Everyone looked for dots and then I took some photos f the dots they spotted. They had no problems finding them in our classroom and around the school. After a short break from recess we were ready to do our dot math centers. The students sorted dots by various attributes like colour or size, they matched dot numbers, and made dot repeating patternings with various materials and on the light board. In the afternoon the students each received a dot to cut out and create a picture with. Then they needed to write a sentence to tell everyone what they can create with a dot. Please stop by our classroom on parent teacher night to see their writing! They are very proud of their work! Then it was time for some dot art! The students created dot art with buttons, googly eyes, paint and corks/glasses, markers and paper to draw dot art, bingo dabbers and coloured paper dots. It looked like we had a dot factory in our room once the students were done creating! At the end of the day we went outside and played with bubbles since they are round and look like a dot too! The students really enjoyed blowing bubbles to end the day. Today during our Math lesson the students organized themselves into groups by the month they were born and practised printing the number for their birthday. We then decided to make a graph of our birthdays to see which month had the most/least birthdays. The students learned that the months of March and June had the most birthdays in our class and April and August had the least birthdays as they had 0. We even had a special birthday in our class today! Happy 6th Birthday Kealey! This week in Language Arts we have been learning our new word wall words (frequent words found in books) and using various materials to make these words. The students used playdough, letter tiles. letter stamps, blocks and white boards and markers to practise writing and spelling these words.
This week our focus in Math has been recognizing and forming numbers. The students have been learning to print and form numbers using various materials such as play dough, salt trays, white boards, fingers in the air, etc. We even learned a few rhymes to help us remember how to make the numbers when printing them! The students focused on the numbers from 0 to 10 for this activity but a few students had some clever ideas to make more numbers. After the students completed the number 10, Nathan showed us that he could add a 0 to it to make 100! That turned into a class discussion about how we can make larger numbers. Nikolas was quick to tell us that is we add another 0 to 100 then we would have 1000! Alex added that if we change the 1 in 1000 to a 2 it would become 2000! Here are a few photos to show our learning. We had a wonderful first day in Grade One! The students are learning the classroom rules and routines and making new friends in our room. We read a book today called, "You Be You" by Linda Kranz where the author used its famous "rock fish" to express the themes of diversity, individuality and acceptance. After reading this book, we made our own unique "rock fish" to share with the class. Take a look at our classes "rock fish" below:
. Here is a sneak peek into our Grade 1 classroom! Everything is ready for the first day of school on September 6th! |
