In anticipation of Halloween our class has been working on a pumpkin writing activity. First, we brainstormed and created a success criteria that outlined the necessary items needed for the construction of our paper pumpkins and our writing. The students decided each pumpkin would need a name, have teeth, be orange, be a certain size (tall/short), and make us feel an emotion when we see them (happy, smile, etc.)
Next, the students went ahead and created their own pumpkins using construction paper. Then, we looked at our pumpkins and wrote sentences for each of the items in our success criteria. As a group we wrote one sentence at a time. We reviewed how to write a proper sentence using an upper case letter at the beginning of a sentence and a period at the end. We also talked about how we need finger spaces between words. The students worked very hard on this writing task! Our first sentence tells what our pumpkins name is. Our second sentence tells what colour our pumpkin is and describes it's size (tall/short/round/small, etc.). Our third sentence tells how many teeth our pumpkin has. Our last sentence tells how our pumpkin makes us feel (happy, smile, giggle, etc.). Please take a look at some of our finished work below.

Our class has been busy doing recount writing. The students have learned what First, Next, Then and Last mean. The students wrote about what they do when they get ready to come to school. They wrote sentences with capital letters to start a sentence, finger spaces between words and periods to end a sentence. They also worked hard to use and spell word wall words and sound out words they do not know how to spell yet. Take a look at some of our work below:
In Science we are learning about daily and seasonal changes. Both Grade 1 classes went on a nature walk yesterday to discover all the changes we see in Fall. The students pointed out the different colour leaves that changed and how they are falling from the trees as well as how the weather is turning colder. We also saw some animal nests high in the trees. This week our students filled our Gem Jar. The students chose a Board Game Day as their reward. Take a look at some of the fun board games they played during last block on Friday.
We have also been exploring number patterns on the 100's chart. The students are learning to skip count by 2's, 5's and 10's to 100! Some students even found other ways to skip count to 100. (By 3's, 4's, even 25's, etc.)
The students have been learning to recognize, represent, and compare numbers to 20. We have been learning about more and less for anchors of 5 and 10 and one to one correspondence using 10 frames. (ie. 5 means 5 blocks and 5 is less than 10). We have also been practising our printing skills when writing numbers to 20.
To prepare for Thanksgiving our class discussed what we are thankful for. The children had many ideas of what they are thankful for such as, their family, home, food, pets, the sun and sky, etc. They then made turkey puppets with the feathers telling what they are thankful for. We also read the book Twas the Night Before Thanksgiving. This story tells about a group of children that went to a farm and found out that the turkeys will be eaten for Thanksgiving Dinner. The children decided they didnt want that to happen so they rescued the turkeys by putting them under their shirts and taking them away to save them. The students practised their writing skills by making lists of foods they would eat instead of turkey. We created turkey paintings by using pastels and watercolour paint. We have many wonderful artists in our class! Take a look at the photos to see all of our creations! In Gym class we have been learning how to play badminton. Check out some of our photos below. |
