Our Science STEM Challenge was to build the tallest most stable structure with only the objects given in our zip lock bags. The students worked hard together to build and measure their structures. When asked how to make a "stable" structure the students were able to explain that the base of their structure needs to be wide so it does not fall down easily.

We are practicing the Reading strategy of Visualization. We read the poem, Green Giant, by Jack Prelutsky and visualized what that giant would look like. Here are our visualizations.
We have been focusing on using descriptive words to make our stories more interesting. We used the candy Pop Rocks to write descriptive words about. The children were given a very small amount of this candy. You should have seen the looks on their faces when the candy started to fizzle. All of a sudden they began to shout out words to describe the sensation, smell and taste of this fun candy! We talked about it with our classmates and made a Pop Rocks web of our ideas. The kids came up with some fantastic words and phrases. My favorite was when Jamie said "It feels like there is a party going on in my mouth!" Take a look at all the other ideas they had!
In Science, our class is learning about materials, objects and everyday structures. We learned about materials that objects are made of and played a game where we sorted objects by the different materials they are made of (metal, plastic, wood and fabric). Then we explored objects and the materials they are made of by using our 5 senses to describe these objects.
In Math, we are learning about addition and addition words. We are learning the needed vocabulary when using addition, such as; in all, sum, add, join, both, combine, total, plus, increase, more than, altogether. We are learning to add using number sentences (3 +7 = 10), drawing pictures and using number lines and manipulatives to help. We made number hands to help us add using number sentences. Next, we will be learning about adding money.
In Language Arts, we are learning about descriptive writing with a focus on adjectives (words that describe something.). I brought in a fancy gift bag and told the students I had had something special inside the bag for them but they needed to describe the bag first before we could look inside. We made a list of all adjectives we could use to describe the gift bag. Students' answers included, blue and beautiful, pretty, glittery, sparkly, fancy, pink, etc. We then used a graphic organizer to record our thoughts. After we completed this we took a look inside the bag and found POP ROCKS! The students will be using the Pop Rocks to write a descriptive piece after eating them. They are very excited to start! We will explore the 5 sense (taste, touch, sight, hearing, and smell) through this descriptive writing activity.
February 14th was Valentines Day and the students in our class were busy celebrating. We dressed in hearts or pink, red and white. We started the day with a read aloud called, "Love Monster" by Rachel Bright. The students created their own love monster puppet to retell the story. We also decorated valentine's day bags so we could hand out our valentine's day cards. And we became artists and created heart paintings that the students took home for their parents. Here is a peek into our day:
On Friday grades 1-3 celebrated the 100th day at school. Students and staff were invited to dress up like they are 100 years old. Our class worked on various 100 day activities such as, building with 100 cups, making 100 day fruit loop necklaces by counting by groups of 10, making gumball machines with 100 bingo dabs to represent the gumballs, making 100 day crowns (counting by 10's), playing dice games to count to 100, etc. Take a look at some of the photos from our 100 day celebrations below:
Today we celebrated Groundhog day in Grade 1. We read the book, Geoffrey Groundhog Predicts the Weather by Bruce Koscielniak. We made predictions about if the groundhog would see it's shadow or not by completing a tally graph together as a class and completing a writing activity to explain what we thought would happen today if the groundhog saw it's shadow or not. We completed another tally graph question where we asked friends in the class if they have ever seen a real groundhog before? The results were that more people have NOT seen a groundhog. Take a look at some photos from our day!
This week we learned about the families of instruments. The students learned which instruments are in the strings, brass, woodwind, and percussion families. We listened to different people/bands playing music with these family of instruments too. The students then decided they wanted to form their own bands to create music using various instruments.
