The “Daily 5” is in full practise in this classroom. The children will become amazing “athletes” in their reading. They will learn 3-ways to read a book independently (read the words, read the pictures, retell the story) and will actively practise them. Our class goal is to build our reading stamina up to 20 minutes (gr. 1) of independent reading time!
The children will learn how to choose a “just right” reader by using the I PICK strategies described below.
The following are the questions they will use.
I – I can choose a book.
P – Purpose: Why do I want to read this book?
I – Interest: Does the book/story/characters interest me?
C – Comprehend: Do I understand it?
K – Know: Do I know most of the words?
The children will have I PICK books in a book bag that is kept in our classroom for use during Daily 5. Currently the children will choose from leveled readers at our school. As Daily 5 progresses during the year, the children may start bringing in books from home.
